Settled in 1847 by fur traders seeking to do business on the Fox River, Appleton has grown into Wisconsin's third most populous area. The area is known for it's many firsts. It hosted the nation's first hydro-electric central station, the Vulcan Street Plant powering the nation's first residence in the world powered by hydro-electricity. Appleton was also the first to operate an electric streetcar. Visitors to the Fox Cities can enjoy the Hearthstone Historic House Museum or catch the minor league baseball fun, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
